The dealer fixed the problem in 2015 but its back again and magically they cant find what they did to it the last time. Called them back 3-28-19 and was told hyundai would not cover replacement. I contacted consumer department at hyundai corporate offices requesting a warranty decision review as I am unable to financially have this work done at this time. I was not aware of the other two recalls until the dealer informed me that day! Went to 2 dealers both said steering is loose but safe. I took it to the dealer and they had to replace the steering column to fix the problem. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired under the recall; however, a week later the vehicle started experiencing the failure listed on the recall. The driver and the passenger both received medical treatment. In addition, the electronic power steering indicator illuminated while the failure occurred. It took every bit of strength I had to turn the car. The cause of the failure was not diagnosed. To have to replace something this major, this early in the life of the car, was a huge shock to me. Many many complaints anout this condition online however. There were no noticeable malfunctions while driving.

Yesterday I was driving and the eps light came on again. While driving between 34-45 mph, I heard a subtle click from either my steering column or behind the dash, which was immediately followed by illumination of the eps warning light and complete loss of power steering assistance. As far back as 07 and as recently as the 2013 model. This is present on several model years with low and high mileage vehicles. With so many complaints of this type, I am surprised hyundai has not looked into it.
When light changed, I tried to to turn left, but the steering wheel locked. The vehicle was restarted, where it began to function normally. This is a known issue and Hyundai would not cover my 2009 Elantra with only 36000 miles on it.
The car is now totaled and undriveable. A year ago- I put the key in and out 3 times the light went off and the steering came back. I could hardly handled it.
