Fingerprints on the bulb will cause the bulb to burn out or explode!. Same for replacemen … t. It's held in place with two Phillips screws. Some earlier units also had a locking clip. This needs to be depressed to release the slide mechanism which releases the headlight.
It may take a bit of a push because there is some gooey adhesive between the headlight and the fender. Before replacing the assembly test the slide mechanism for smoothness of slide. Take the rubber seal off from behind the bulb and reach in with fingers to un-hitch it. Then, to remove the bulb, slide the inside edge of the spring clip right side for the passenger side bulb, left side for the driver side that holds the headlight bulb in place down, and let it pop open. Line up the tabs of the bulb base with the slots in the reflector housing and drop the bulb in. If it is stiff, you can use a flat blade screwdriver and insert into the hollow gray stick.

All you do now is test the lights. Unplug the wiring harness attached to the headlight bulb. The secret to putting th … e wire snap back on is to engage the top of the wire in the hole first before sliding it back over the cover. Move the wire snap on the headlight plate cover to release the headlight plate cover. This applies to Sharan fogs as well.
I replaced the driver's side low beam lamp without removing the battery. I have changed it yesterday. There are 2 plastic tabs, one on each side that must be depressed while pulling out. Of if all else fails you … can drop your car off at the dealership and they will only charge u about 40 dollars to put it in. I don't know how necessary it was, but I also noted which of the two wires was on top when I unplugged the headlight bulb, so I could replace everything the same way.
Position the headlight up to the fender. Sorry cant go into details on how to do it because I havent done it yet but hey that's the instructions I got on how to do it so maybe it will help you. Check your lights for operation. On the passenger side, turn the stick clockwise first, then remove. There will be twometal clips that use pressure to hold the cover in place. If you are replacing it install a new bulb. It's part of the headlight assembly, under the hood, in behind the bulb.
I would add to the above the following: 1. Mine would move about half the distance necessary to release the headlight. These covers a plastic, and in coldweather, or in a vehicle that hasn't been recently worked on, theycould snap. Don't try to put the wire back over the cover and forcing the top of the wire into the hole like I did. . I've just changed them on a 2000 model.
The reflector, likewise, is made in two sections. We changed one at the shop where I work and it took 5 hours with two people working on it. They are turned different depending on sides but there is a small sticker to show which way to turn it. Remove the defective bulb and replace it with the new one, being careful to handle it by the prongs, do not touch the glass. Watch out for glass that will have fallen behind the black plastic grille! Replace the bulb, reconnect the clip connection, replace the wire clasp, replace the black shroud, reconnect the wire harness and slide the headlight back into the fender.
