Movies like this give Cute a bad name. They work well together and make believable siblings. They succeed with a little Christmas magic from. While All I Want for Christmas is not exactly an overlooked gem--it's not quite charming enough to be considered among the classics--one of its strongest features is its amazing cast. You'll be glad you did. All I Want for Christmas is sweetly old-fashioned but it's also a bit bland and syrupy for my tastes.
On the review aggregator , the film has a score of 0%. Adding to the classic movie feel of the film is the presence of Lauren Bacall. I've always admired her chutzpah both on screen and off. Ethan, played by twelve year old Ethan Embry, is a mature for his age boy who looks out for his little sister. Instead, there is a reunion, interrupted by Mom's boring boyfriend, who bursts in nobody ever locks the door in Manhattan , also neglects to ask why two emergency vehicles are flashing outside, and denounces the kids.
So what is the plan? It is an innocent and charming tale of two children trying to adjust to their changing world. This may not have become a holiday classic but it has something to offer and is definitely worth watching on a cold December day. Hallie is distraught to find that their mother is about to marry another man, Tony, while Ethan has become infatuated with a girl visiting from Boston. Ethan, meanwhile, is preoccupied with not only his parents' romantic dilemma, but also his own - one brought about by his new friendship with Stephanie, his first teenage crush. This is an early role for actress Thora Birch who eventually would star in the cult classics American Beauty and Ghost World. Is watching All I Want for Christmas a holiday tradition with your family? Aren't you in for a surprise! This is Santa Claus, not Dear Abby. Hallie's older brother Ethan decides to correct the situation by planning an elaborate scheme to force his emotionally distant parents to spend time together, hoping that the physical nearness will bring about a romantic change of heart.
The story's premise is certainly catchy: an adorable little girl named Hallie makes a Christmas wish for her recently divorced parents to get married again. The parents remembering their history and admitting their flaws is likewise romantic. The duo's primary obstacle is their mother's fiance, Tony. Catherine decides to reject Tony and remarry Michael, completing Hallie's wish. Music swells on the sound track, and Ethan and his girlfriend walk out onto the front porch, where neither notices that the emergency vehicles have disappeared. As Christmas approaches, the kids manage to lock their mother's fiancé, Tony Kevin Nealon , in an ice cream truck and have him whisked off to New Jersey, all in an attempt to make their mom believe that she's been stood up. On Christmas morning, everyone assembles at the home in a panic, after the kids have seemingly disappeared.
Ethan gets pre-occupied with not only his parents' romantic dilemma, but also his own, one brought about by his new friendship with Stephanie Amy Oberer. Hallie and Ethan plot to get their parents back together at Christmas time. I get that it's a family holiday movie but this is a very white, upper-class, sanitized version of Manhattan. Complicating things is a smarmy businessman named Toney Boer, who has taken an interest in Catherine. As you can imagine, a Christmas movie about divorced parents reuniting has all the potential to be a popular, heart-warming fantasy. This movie may not have provided Bacall with a role that made critics' lists of highlights of her career. Ethan, a practical older brother, and adorable Hallie, who knows how to charm her way out of a difficult situation, are intent on spending Christmas with their parents, Catherine and Michael, and grandmother Lillian.
Stephanie and Ethan talk one more time as she gives him a kiss; they begin a relationship, and everyone lives happily ever after. Set in New York at Christmas time, it could actually take place at any time in the past one hundred years. Their parents have recently divorced and this will be their first Christmas without their family being together. All I Want For Christmas 1991 Movie 1 Hour 32 Minutes, Color, Rated G, Widescreen If teenaged Ethan and his younger sister Hallie put every toy in Macy's department store on their Christmas list, it still wouldn't include what they want most. But thank God they found Snowball.
The entire proceeding feels like a Walt Disney film and I mean that in a good way. As Ethan and Hallie embark on their adventure, almost nothing goes exactly as they planned. It's the mark of a real jerk. An elaborate scheme evolves with mice, telephone calls, and an ice cream truck, as Ethan and Hallie try to achieve their goal for helping Stephanie, and see Tony as the primary obstacle. They want a miracle - they want their divorced parents back together. Your enjoyment of it will depend on your tolerance for cheap sentiment and very mild holiday humor.
The kids go into the house but never ask why an ambulance is parked outside, nor does anyone tell them. All I Want for Christmas may never top your list of Best Christmas Movies, however it is an enjoyable story that is made even more entertaining by a stellar cast. So, on Christmas Eve, the kids contrive a scheme that involves trapping Tony in an ice cream truck on its way to New Jersey, so that Mom will think she'd been stood up, while Hallie fakes being sick so Mom will come over to Dad's luxury penthouse studio above the diner and maybe the parents will reconcile. Last but not least in this list of noteworthy cast members is Leslie Nielsen who plays the Macy's department store Santa Claus. Ethan Randall and Thora Birch play siblings who come up with a hilarious plan to reunite their parents Harley Jane Kozak and Jamey Sheridan. Mom is about to marry Tony, a bore we know this because his last name is Boer. Jamey Sheridan played Vice President Walden on the first and second seasons of Homeland.
