Things start to look promising for Charlie and Marcy when he meets Melanie, the assistant to Santa Monica Cops's showrunner, Rick Rath. Meanwhile, Charlie meets Rath's new assistant; and Karen gets an unexpected surprise. It appears to be a perfect match-up when Lars surprises Hank with one of his favorite working girls, Trixie. While searching for a new agent, Hank meets Hollywood power agent Larry Levine, who quickly sets a meeting with the top-notch filmmaker Lars Manderhoff, who also happens to be a Hank Moody idol. But life as America's bad-boy novelist isn't always sweet. Marcy loses her resolve to stay upset with Stu, and Karen unexpectedly finds a new job. Hank's stylish ways and witty humor are complimented by the eclectic cast of characters he runs into and situations he finds himself in. Luckily for Hank and the rest of the movie's crew, Charlie has a backup plan in place. However, Hank's rendezvous with the film's leading lady strains his relationship with Sam.
After overcoming writer's block, he takes a job ghostwriting a famous record producer's memoir and later teaches a college course in creative writing. Hank realizes that Becca inherited some of his writing talents after watching her during a reading of her latest work. Meanwhile, Marcy fires Lizzie after an inappropriate encounter with Stu, and Lizzie turns to Charlie for help and allows their relationship to progress, only to have Marcy beg for her return. Richard makes a surprising announcement about Hank and Karen. Hank's only calling in life, besides writing, is to reunite with his family, made up of his beloved ex-girlfriend Karen Van Der Beek and their daughter, Becca. His obsession with truth-telling and self-destructive behavior -- drinks, drugs and relationships -- are both destroying and enriching his career. Later, Charlie, Marcy, Krull, Levon and his new friend bring even more drama to the night; and chaos ensues when Stu assaults Charlie's manhood.

Hank has an encounter with Atticus's wife that puts him in an uncomfortable position with Karen, while Charlie takes Stuart out for the day and has an unexpected encounter of his own. Hank tries to smooth things over with Becca, but she has some news about Tyler that leaves him shocked. Karen gets an unexpected surprise, and so does Hank when he visits Levon's apartment. Becca considers other career options, and Charlie and Stu team up to win back Marcy but find it difficult because of Ophelia's influence on Marcy. Charlie and Marcy also make a life-changing decision, and the group gather to make sure that Atticus arrives at the Greek Theatre, where he is co-headlining a performance with Marilyn Manson.
He makes a final stop at Malibar, where he runs into Lizzie, who convinces Hank to go back to Charlie's house with.
